Get going with Goldie from Parky Blinders; suitable for all levels of mobility, care partners are encouraged to join-in
The aim of these sessions is to work on the size of your movements, your rhythm, weight transfer and balance. Weight-transfer is important for gait issues, such as freezing and can help to prevent falls. There has been less research into the effects of boxing in Parkinson's, as this is a relatively novel field, but many groups are popping up across the UK. Parky Blinders, run by Richard Powers, originated in Newquay Boxing Academy in Cornwall and we have collaborated with them to deliver this class to Londoners.
Each session starts with a warm, then moves on to different boxing-related drills, some of which are in pairs. The group have picked their own tunes to motivate themselves through the sessions (no prizes for guessing that the Rocky theme tune makes an appearance!)

"The Parky Blinders boxing classes are excellent. The coaches are so patient and friendly. We get to choose songs to our class playlist which really helps. The routines help improve our coordination, balance and strength, and we usually finish with some cardio circuits. Best of all, it is really great fun. I’ve made lots of new friends and the group and coaches are so welcoming to newcomers. It's fun and I sometimes bring my daughters too - everyone is welcome."
